Youth Organizers Hold Bipartisan “Democracy Over Partisanship” Press Conference with Councilwoman Yassamin Ansari, Urge Senator Sinema to Pass the For the People Act

[Tempe, AZ]—  Yesterday afternoon, (Thursday July 29, 2021) Un-PAC student organizers held a bipartisan press conference with young people across the political spectrum and Councilwoman Yassamin Ansari (the youngest woman ever elected in Phoenix City Council history) to celebrate Senator Kyrsten Sinema for voting “yes” on the For the People Act, H.R. 1,  S.1 and to further urge her to ensure the passage of the bill on the Senate floor.This was a direct response to the June 22nd Senate procedural vote on the bill. S.1. has not yet been debated or passed due to the filibuster threat. 

“We are putting political parties aside and uniting to demand that the For the People Act be passed into law by any means necessary” said Un-PAC Organizer and University of Arizona student, Regan Anderson. “Young conservatives, liberals, independents and progressives all understand that right now, our democracy works for corporations and billionaires, not for us. To Senator Sinema, you can guarantee the support of a united generation of young Arizonans by doing everything in your power to ensure that this bill becomes law.”

Earlier this month, Un-PAC organizers met with Senator Sinema’s staff, where they stressed the importance of moving Republican senators on the bill. In the past eight weeks, Un-PAC organizers and their volunteer teams across the state have reportedly collected thousands of signatures from young people across the political spectrum, declaring that their support for Senator Sinema is contingent on her passage of the For The People Act.

“Trump was right: we need to drain the swamp, and that’s what passing the For The People Act would do,” stated Un-PAC Student Organizer and ASU student, Anna Mohr-Almeida. 

Young people in Arizona are a growing electorate. The more than half a million 18-29 year olds represent nearly 23% of Arizona’s potential voting population, a massive bloc. However, young people consistently vote at low rates relative to older demographics, and rarely contribute to expensive political campaigns. The already limited voting power of young people has been further diminished by recent voter suppression bills passed in Arizona, such as S.B. 1485 and S.B. 1003, which will increase purges from the voter rolls and decrease the acceptance of mail-in ballots.

“This isn’t about Democrats or Republicans,” said Councilwoman Yassamin Ansari. “This is about making sure every eligible voter has the opportunity to cast a vote—regardless  of how they choose to vote or how often. A foundation for a strong democracy starts with our government making voting accessible and convenient for everyone. And they can look to Arizona for data on how early voting and online voter registration is secure, popular and preferred among all parties. Our voting rights must be protected. I’m so proud to see both our Arizona senators voicing the same.”
